The Reds duo surprised the young striker as she was giving an interview about playing for Manchester United’s under 17s girls’ team. Keeley was invited with her grandparents to the Aon Training Complex for the filming but didn’t expect to meet any of her footballing heroes.
The 16-year-old was overwhelmed when Fellaini and Martial interrupted her interview to present her and her grandad with a signed shirt each and invite them to watch a first-team training session in the New Year.
Keeley, who cites Martial as an inspiration, said, “I couldn’t believe it when they walked in, it was an absolute surprise. I’m a striker and I love to watch Martial play; he made a massive difference when he came into the team and it’s been really good to meet him and Fellaini.”
Keeley was nominated for the Christmas surprise by Emma Fletcher, manager of the Girls’ Centre of Excellence, in recognition of her growing confidence and dedication to football. Keeley lives with her grandparents and relies on her grandad to take her to training. Apart from her grandparents, football is the only other mainstay in Keeley’s life.
Emma commented, “Keeley started with us in the under 13s age group and we always knew she was a very gifted player. Sometimes it’s difficult for her to get to training but that’s why we’ve worked so closely with her grandparents to make sure we can keep her in the programme because she could go on to massive things.
“It’s a huge inspiration for her to meet the players; it’s difficult to put into words but that moment will just live with her forever. She deserves it so much and we’re so pleased we’re in a position to be able to do something like this for her.”
