Foundation Girls Do The Double

Manchester United Foundation’s U16 Girls team are crowned National and UK Champions.

Foundation Girls Do The Double

Manchester United Foundation’s U16 girls, representing England, were crowned UK champions at the Tesco Cup football final at the Reebok Stadium on Sunday 24th May. The team took the honours after winning 1-0 in extra time against last year's champions Hibernian FC U16s.

Former Republic of Ireland player Andy Townsend and England women's first team goalkeeper Rachel Brown both attended the event and selected Saffron Jordan as 'Player of the Tournament' for the girls with teammate Lakisha Deweever winning ‘Forward of the Tournament.'

The win was on the back of the team being crowned national champions last weekend after they beat West Bromwich Albion in the Tesco Cup at The Walker Stadium.  This set them up to represent England at the Reebok Stadium.  The girls mirrored the success of the Manchester United first team who were this year crowned Premier League Champions for a third year running.

The Foundation provides a comprehensive programme for the girls’ teams, all of which are excelling in their relevant leagues, with many of them reaching the finals of the Lancashire cup.

Manchester United U16 Team Manager Zeki Istanbul said, ‘The final was absolutely brilliant. The girls have worked really hard to get here and deserved to win the UK final!  We are all really proud of them.'
