Manchester United fans can look forward to welcoming back a team of club heroes for the Legends of the North match on the 21st May 2022 at Old Trafford.

Diego Forlan, Patrice Evra, John O’Shea, Mikael Silvestre and Karel Poborsky will make up the bedrock of Bryan Robson’s squad, with the Manchester United ambassador returning as manager for the clash against Liverpool FC.

Treble-winner Andrew Cole will also join Robson in the dugout, helping to lead a squad with an impressive array of honours achieved during their time at Manchester United. The fixture is certainly shaping up to be one not to be missed.

The former Reds are no strangers to taking on the Merseysiders – in 2002 Diego Forlan struck twice in a three-minute spell to help United defeat their arch-rivals 2-1 at Anfield, with Mikael Silvestre also notching a brace at Old Trafford two years later. However, it was John O’Shea’s last-minute winner in front of the Kop in 2007 that was pick of the bunch.

Two other popular returnees to the Theatre of Dreams will be Patrice Evra, a man whose passion for United has fostered a special connection with Reds supporters far and wide, and Karel Poborsky, who signed for the club after shining in Euro ’96 for the Czech Republic.

Former Uruguay forward Forlan, who is looking forward to making a long-awaited return to Manchester, commented: “I have said for a long time that I need to return to Old Trafford, but I didn't think it would be as a player! It will be an honour to step back out onto the pitch and see all the fans again who have continued to chant my name for all these years.

“It will be a great opportunity for me and for everyone involved, especially to play against our old rivals Liverpool, but also to raise money for the children of Greater Manchester.”

The match will see Manchester United Legends take on Liverpool FC Legends, reigniting a historic rivalry in a bid to be crowned Legends of the North.
