Legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel joined forces with Manchester United Foundation to surprise children at Elm Wood Primary School in Middleton, taking part in a variety of fun activities and answering pupils’ questions.

The morning session saw Peter take part in a throwing and catching session with a Year 1 class outside. The excited five- and six-year-olds showed off their throwing skills and thoroughly enjoyed asking Peter questions at the end. He then stunned a Year 5 class, taking park in a Q&A with pupils about his footballing career.

“The kids have been brilliant and I think they had a very good time,” said Peter during the visit. “The work the Foundation is doing is so impressive; I really think it’s important that the club connects to the local area and helps provide the platform for kids to do a variety of things.”

The pupils certainly enjoyed the day with Blake, aged 5, saying, “When Peter Schmeichel came to my school it made me really happy.”

Fern, 6, added, “My favourite bit was when Peter Schmeichel joined in with me and my friends to throw and catch the ball.”

In celebration of World Book Day on the 7th March, Peter also sat down with a group of pupils in the school library, for a special reading of ‘A Snake in my School’. Engaging with the story, the children couldn’t hide their delight in telling Peter all about their pets and animals.

“It’s been nice to come out and see this school,” said Peter, who has previously supported the Foundation through fundraising events and challenges. “It’s great that we can provide something for them; whether it’s football, other sports, reading or music – whatever you want to do in life, I think it’s so important to just be happy.”

Peter Schmeichel is set to join the Manchester United ’99 Legends team, including Stam, Denis Irwin and Gary Neville, for the Treble Reunion match against FC Bayern Legends on 26th May 2019. The match takes place exactly 20 years to the date that United emerged victorious at Camp Nou in 1999.  The two teams will meet once again in an anniversary match to raise funds for Manchester United Foundation.
