Stretford teenagers represent Manchester United in Germany

The team, who took part in last year’s World War 1 memorial fixture, also had the chance to visit the HDI Arena to watch Hannover 96 take on Bundesliga rivals Hertha Berlin.

 
The overseas visit, organised in conjunction with Stretford High School and Trafford Council, and with the help of a donation from the Association of Former Manchester United Players (AFMUP), was an opportunity for the fifteen and sixteen year old students to experience grassroots football in the home of the current World Champions. 

Stretford High School teacher, Christopher Hirst, was impressed with the impact that the project had on students. He said “I’ve been heavily invested in this team and over the last 12 months I’ve seen a seismic shift in the attitudes and attainment of the pupils involved. Predicted grades have increased and every player has taken pride in their role as an ambassador for the partnership between Stretford High School and Manchester United Foundation.”

Tom Fitton, a Manchester United Foundation coach based full time at Stretford High School, was pleased that the team had an opportunity to represent the Foundation. He said “For these particular pupils the whole experience has been fantastic. They’ve been put outside of their comfort zone, and have been given a great responsibility. Their behaviour on the trip was exemplary and they have been a credit to the school and the Foundation.”

He added “We’re hoping to continue developing the relationships between the Foundation and other European football foundations. The chance to experience playing football and representing the badge overseas is a great motivator for participants across all Foundation projects.”
