The pupils, aged between 14 and 16 years, lay a wreath of poppies at the Stretford War Memorial and also attended the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the Trafford Town Hall. The pupils have been chosen to represent Manchester United in a WW1 memorial fixture in December.

Stretford High School teacher, Chris Hirst, has been working with Manchester United Foundation and Trafford Council to arrange for the pupils to take part in a number of WW1 focused events, including a visit to the Imperial War Museum, an army assault course, and fundraising activities at the Manchester United Santa Run.

Mr Hirst said: "It's an integral part of the whole World War One Christmas truce football match that our students remember and reflect upon the sacrifices made by soldiers on both sides 100 years ago. Our lads understand that and it has been an honour to work with them and see how seriously they have taken their duties. They have shown proper respect to the memory of those who suffered."

Councillor Sean Anstee, Leader of Trafford Council said “It was a poignant and significant opportunity to not only welcome the team to the service, but also give them the chance to further understand the local sacrifices that were made during the First World War. It was fantastic to see the Trafford squad take part in such a special occasion which remembers those who have given their lives in service to their country.”

The memorial match takes place on Saturday 13th December and will be held at Manchester United’s former training ground, The Cliff, against a visiting community team from Mönchengladbach, Germany. Both sets of teams will be treated to an Old Trafford tour and will be special guests at the Manchester United vs Liverpool fixture.
