On Saturday 12th July the Manchester United Foundation Youth Choir performed their end of season summer concert at the National Football Museum.

The choir is made up of 30-40 young people, aged from 11-18, and since its formation in 2010 has steadily grown into a strong four-part group.

Members attend local schools and Foundation partner schools, and they meet to rehearse every Monday night at Old Trafford.  The choir celebrates the Foundation’s work with young people across Greater Manchester, giving them a unique opportunity to showcase their talent.

The summer concert attracted a large crowd to the National Football Museum in Manchester and the choir performed an hour-long set, including popular chart hits by Pharrell Williams and Sam Smith, as well as a moving tribute to the Busby Babes, ‘Coming Home’, penned by Manchester United Foundation chief executive, John Shiels.

18-year-old Sam was one of the founding members of the choir but is leaving for University this summer.  “I am going to miss everything about the choir and I am so grateful for all the opportunities,” she said. “I am also so honoured to be able to sing a song like ‘Coming Home’ with such meaning behind it. I’ve had a great couple of years, thank you.”

Fellow chorister, Tameka, added, “It’s really exciting to be a part of the club, especially being a Manchester United supporter.  It’s made me a lot more confident when performing for bigger audiences and we’ve done a lot of performances in front of important people so it makes it easier to perform now.”

The choir has previously performed on BBC Radio Manchester with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra on a number of occasions and on the pitch at Old Trafford, as well as various other television and radio appearances.  Most recently the choir was asked to perform with Manchester band ‘The Electric Stars’ on their tribute single ‘Belfast Boy’, which honoured United legend George Best.
