United Legend takes part in Queens Baton Relay

Children from Manchester United Foundation partner schools took part in a relay around the Theatre of Dreams and formed a guard of honour for United Legend, Bryan Robson who helped carry the Commonwealth Games Baton across the pitch.

Manchester United's charity partner UNICEF is also the official partner of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 and former club captain Bryan said, “We’ve been proud at Manchester United to have helped UNICEF for so many years to make a real difference to the lives of children across the world.  We’re asking everyone to get right behind UNICEF once again for their exciting partnership with the Commonwealth Games.” 

Chief Executive of Commonwealth Games England, Adam Paker, added, ”I’m delighted that the Queen’s Baton has been to Old Trafford on the first day of its journey through England. I hope it enthuses people to try a sport, support Team England at the Commonwealth Games and get behind UNICEF.” 

Once the Baton had left the stadium, 20 pupils turned into mini journalists and held their very own press conference, giving them the opportunity to ask Captain Marvel some of their own questions.

UNICEF’s Commonwealth Games Project Director, Tom Burstow, who joined Bryan on the panel, said, “It’s fantastic that Manchester United have once again shown their true support for UNICEF by welcoming the Queen’s Baton to Old Trafford.  The Commonwealth Games and the power of sport offers a unique opportunity to make positive differences to the lives of children in the UK and throughout the Commonwealth. We’re delighted that our partnership with Glasgow 2014 is being celebrated and supported by the club and children in this great sporting city.”
