On 1st July 2012, members of the Manchester United Foundation and Club took part in the Great Manchester Swim, raising over £800 for charity.

Katie Newton and Rachael Ashmore, who work in the Foundation’s Communications Department, joined Andrea Murphy from the Club to take part in the one mile swim at Salford Quays.  During the unique dock-to-dock course the trio swam from Dock 9 at MediaCity along Mariners Canal and crossed the finish line at Dock 8 beside Salford Watersports Centre.

Together they have raised over £800, which will go towards Manchester United Foundation’s projects to help underprivileged children across Greater Manchester. Katie and Rachael both agreed, "It was a tough challenge but a great way to support our charity and we are looking forward to doing it again next year."

Andrea added, "Swimming the Quays is my yearly challenge but doing it for the Foundation makes it worthwhile!"

Rachael completed the swim with a time of 45:48, closely followed by Katie with 46:43. The Foundation duo were narrowly beaten by Andrea, however, who came in at 43:55.

Altogether over 20,000 people signed up to take part in British Gas swims being held in different locations all over the UK.  Participants swam the race as a way to either raise money for a charity, give themselves a challenge or to beat their own personal best. On Sunday, around 3,000 people took part in the Great Manchester Swim, all of different ages and swimming abilities, and swam the mile long race all the way to the finish line.
