UNICEF Japan Position 2009

Japan Position

Thank you to everyone who has enquired about the Japan earthquake and tsunami.

UNICEF’s Executive Director, Tony Lake, has been in contact with the Japanese Government to offer UNICEF’s support if needed. As a result, the Japan Committee for UNICEF has launched an appeal and will be responding locally, as you would expect in these extreme circumstances.

The interventions that the Japan Committee for UNICEF will assist with are:

 providing immediate relief supplies for children in severely affected areas
 setting up child-friendly spaces
 assisting with the re-opening of schools
 offering technical expertise in the delivery by local staff of humanitarian assistance
 provision of health and sanitation kits
 psychosocial support via schools, in the community and in religious settings

If approached, UNICEF UK is currently able to accept funds from our corporate partners on behalf of the Japan Committee for UNICEF, but has not launched a UK appeal at this time.
