Lewis' Legacy

United's historic training ground, The Cliff, recently played host to a very poignant event.

Lewis Roberts, from Norfolk, was a huge United fan hailing from a family of passionate Reds. Earlier this year, Lewis tragically lost his life in a car accident, and those closest to him wanted to do something to honour his life and his love of United.

In an incredible act of kindness, his family decided to donate funds raised at his funeral to the Foundation, a generous act acknowledged with a tournament played in his name.

The tournament saw young people from across the Foundation’s network of Street Reds projects come together at The Cliff to compete for the Lewis Michael Henson Roberts Memorial trophy – a fitting location for Lewis to be honoured, in the place where legends such as Best, Beckham, Scholes and Robson all honed their craft.

Lewis’ family were visibly moved throughout the day, watching on as Foundation participants enjoyed every second. The kind of opportunity that we can continue to provide for vulnerable young people, thanks to generous support such as this.

“It’s been a truly special day in memory of our beautiful Lewis, my incredible nephew” said Kim, Lewis’ auntie. “He’s with us every day and you could absolutely feel him here, as he was United through and through; I know he would have been amazed by this.

“This is our way of honouring him and creating a legacy for Lewis, and I know he would have loved to see these United-mad kids having an unforgettable day. As I say, it has been truly special.”

This week is Remember A Charity Week, which reminds people of the impact a legacy donation can make to charities that held a special place in their heart, or that of a loved one – such as with Lewis and his family.
