Scholes in Perth

Legends Down Under

Manchester United Legends headed Down Under for an all-star charity match at the nib Stadium in Perth.

On 25th March 2017, former Manchester United players, including Paul Scholes, Dwight Yorke and Denis Irwin, took on the PFA Aussie Legends at the nib Stadium, Perth, to raise money for Manchester United Foundation and the DT38 Foundation.

It was the first time the Manchester United Legends have visited Western Australia and the team was managed by former United and England captain, Bryan Robson. It’s also the first time Professional Footballers Australia had assembled a legends team, which was coached by former Socceroos coach Frank Farina OAM.

Manchester United's Legends suffered a 3-0 defeat but the charity match still provided a memorable occasion in Western Australia.  Goals from Nick Carle, Bobby Despotovski and Con Boutsianis gave the Aussie Legends a deserved victory against the ex-Reds, who unfortunately lost Quinton Fortune and Paul Scholes to injury in the first half.

The match follows previous Manchester United Legends campaigns against Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Liverpool FC, and player-manager Robson says the team still relish the competition.  “The previous legends games have gone fantastically, for the fans and also the amount of money raised for Manchester United Foundation and other charities. Despite the score in Perth, we still received a fantastic response from the fans and as players we really appreciate all the support.”

The Manchester United players next challenge is against European rivals Barcelona at Camp Nou on 30th June 2017, before the Spaniards return to Old Trafford in September 2017.
