Foundation on the airwaves

Thanks to our presenting partner, DXC Technology, our participants enjoyed a workshop at LGBTQ+ radio station, Gaydio.

The Foundation are always looking for unique and different ways to inspire and engage our participants, and we recently took a group of media-savvy students from our partner schools Waterhead Academy and Kingsway Park to take part in a special broadcasting and podcasting workshop at LGBTQ+ radio station Gaydio, in the centre of Manchester.

"I'm Elizabeth and thank you for listening to Gaydio," declared one of the participants in attendance, as she made her unofficial bow on the airwaves. The experience was funded by the Foundation’s presenting partner, DXC Technology, and gave the youngsters the opportunity to learn about different roles in the industry, write and rehearse their own live radio intro and discover how podcasts are created before recording their very own - covering the topic of diversity and inclusion in sport.

"It’s been really eye-opening, and it's helped me figure out that this could actually be a cool profession to pursue,” said Ethan, a student from Waterhead Academy.

It doesn’t feel like a normal job,” he continued. “It feels a lot more fun and interactive, and I love how welcoming this place is no matter what pronouns you use, no matter who you like, no matter what gender you are. There's a little bit of everyone here, and it makes you feel really connected."

"We've been learning about different ways of getting into the media, and also how radio stations work," Elizabeth added. "I've really enjoyed doing something new, something that we wouldn't normally get to do: recording ourselves, doing a radio intro and overall, just having fun!"
