Sign up for the 2016 Santa Run

Manchester United Foundation’s annual Santa Run returns on Sunday 4th December for its tenth year as runners will once again don their favourite Christmas outfits for the popular community event.

Former Reds defender David May will be on hand to kick off the 2K Family Fun Run and the 5K Serious Santa Run and is looking forward to being involved: “I can’t wait! I know Denis Irwin did it last year and even ran the race; he thoroughly enjoyed it so I’m looking forward to it. The Foundation does a wonderful job across Greater Manchester, and for the ex-players to join in gives something back to the community.”

David will be following in the footsteps of former players including Ryan Giggs, Bryan Robson and Denis Irwin who have previously started the races over the years, with the latter joining 1,700 runners last year and taking part himself, much to the delight of fans.

The route sets off on the Old Trafford forecourt before leading Santa Runners down Sir Alex Ferguson Way and taking in the sights of the Imperial War Museum, The Lowry and MediaCityUK before they cross the finish line outside the Theatre of Dreams.

Alongside the races, there will be festive activities including a brass band playing everyone’s favourite Christmas tunes and the chance to visit Father Christmas in his grotto for the little ones.

David has previously been involved in fundraising events for the Foundation including a charity abseil and a gruelling trek to Machu Picchu in 2011: “I think the good thing about this event is that all charities can benefit; so you can run for any cause close to your heart.”

May added, “Manchester is a great city to be able to bring people together and over the years it goes to show what the people of Manchester are all about: they give their hard earned money to charities and without that the charities wouldn’t be able to continue the fantastic work they do.”

On his own plans Christmas this year, May commented, “I’m looking forward to Christmas; it’s always a special time spending it with family although I’m sure I’ll be busy working with MUTV too!”
