The 42km (26.2 mile) race takes place every two years and has been recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the highest marathon in the world. The rough mountainous course starts at Mount Everest Base Camp at 5,364 metres (17,598 ft) with the finish line in the Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar at 3,440 metres (11,286 ft). 

As part of Steve’s expedition Manchester United Foundation provided a special donation of team shirts worn by Manchester United players and opposition during the 2013/14 season. Upon completing the marathon Steve donated the shirts to local school children in the town of Namche Bazaar. The excited primary school pupils took part in a specially organised kick-about while parading the pitch in shirts worn by Manchester United legends such as Ferdinand, Evra, Carrick and Rooney. 

As a huge red, Steve wanted to make sure he gave something back to the local Sherpa community that regularly ensures the safe transfer of visitors to Everest basecamp. Speaking about the donation Steve said, "Manchester United Foundation kindly gave us shirts that had been worn by the players to give to a school there and we held a friendly game with the pupils, the highest ever friendly football match!  We also gave each class a Manchester shirt to go to the top performers in the school as a bit of an incentive."
