“It will be a great day out for families” said Irwin, “I hope the weather is kind to us but either way I hope we have a great turn out and everyone enjoys themselves.”

Denis will be officially starting the 5km race at 11:30am before setting off the 2km race at 12:30pm which the United legend himself will take part in. “I could probably do the 5km but I’ve got to start the 2km not long after so I will join runners for that one. I think I could do the 2km in about 20 minutes with a Santa suit on; I better get some practice in actually!”

Denis will be following in the footsteps of both ex and current players including, Ryan Giggs, Bryan Robson and Michael Carrick who have all previously been involved as official starters over the years.

Alongside both races, runners will be treated to a brass band playing everyone’s favourite Christmas tunes and a performance by the Foundation’s Street Dance crew. Youngsters can also head inside the stadium to have their faces painted before visiting Santa in his grotto.

Irwin described how important these types of events are in raising funds for many charities, “These events are very important, there are some great charities out there, Manchester United Foundation being one of them, and so to have the opportunity to raise money for a charity of your choice is fantastic.”
