The latest of the Foundation’s biannual Dream Days was given a festive theme, as children and adults with serious and life-limiting illnesses were invited to the training ground in Carrington to meet the first-team and enjoy some Christmas cheer.

After signing autographs and posing for photos with his fellow players, vice-captain Darren Fletcher explained more about why getting involved in the club’s charitable activities is so important to the players.

“It’s fantastic to be able to give something back and to meet everyone; it’s a great day. We do it every year, and all the players look forward to it,” Darren said.  “Seeing the smiles on their faces, especially at Christmas time, means a lot.”

Held in association with Starlight Children’s Foundation, The Willow Foundation and Rays of Sunshine Children’s Charity, Manchester United has hosted Dream Days for over 20 years. 

For the fans who attend, the event can provide a vital boost at a time when they need it most.  Eight-year-old George Bould from Stoke suffers from Wilms Tumour, a form of kidney cancer, and was delighted to meet his hero, Robin van Persie: “Today was absolutely brilliant; I was really excited and it’s brilliant to see Robin van Persie.  He signed all my stuff and was really nice.”

Robin sat with George whilst the pair were interviewed for Match of the Day and George presented Robin with a personalised bracelet, which he proudly wore and shared on his Instagram page later that day. 

The Dutch striker commented, “It’s very important to give something back to all our fans, especially fans that have gone through a difficult time in their own way, so it gives me a great feeling to see all these smiles today.  I hope it has a big impact on the kids and that we have given them a day they will never forget.”
