Manchester United Foundation joined forces with Show Racism the Red Card last week to host an educational event for young people from local schools.

Local pupils Show Racism the Red Card at Old Trafford event

Year 5 pupils from Foundation partner primary schools, The Willows and Seymour Park attended the event, which was supported by Manchester City Council, in the Europa Suite at Old Trafford.  They took part in workshops from Show Racism the Red Card, which examined stereotypes and where they come from, a definition of racism and encouraged young people to think critically about information they receive.

In the afternoon the audience regrouped to put their questions to a panel which included Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic, Show Racism the Red Card Education Worker, Laura Pidcock and Cllr Luthfur Rahman, Lead Member for Race at Manchester City Council.

The young people had put a lot of thought into their questions throughout the morning and brought some interesting and insightful answers from the panel, who were happy to share their experiences and advice.

Manchester United provided a team shirt, signed by Nemanja’s defensive partner Rio Ferdinand, as a prize for the panel’s favourite question of the session. The Serbian international also signed t-shirts and mini footballs to hand out as runners-up prizes.

The panel’s favourite question of the day was ‘Do you think that people who are racist should be punished or put in prison?’ Nemanja also answered some football questions which proved to be even harder than those on racism!

Following the prize presentation the pupils watched the Show Racism the Red Card film before leaving with souvenir goody bags.
