New Charter Crowned Hub Champions

The Foundation Hub of the Community team recently hosted the first annual Year 11 9-a-side football tournament at The Cliff Training Ground.

New Charter Crowned Hub Champions

The event was attended by students from each of the Foundation’s eight partner schools, located across Greater Manchester.  Ahead of the tournament the teams received an inspirational talk from Chief Executive of Manchester United Foundation John Shiels.

John explained the history of The Cliff Training Ground, listed the players who have played and trained at the historic venue over the years and encouraged the pupils to savour the day.

The tournament was organised by Rob Curran, Hub Development Officer for partner school Irlam and Cadishead College, and proved to be a huge success.

Pupils from Burnage Media Arts College assisted with refereeing and some students also filmed the event, including interviews with players and staff from the Foundation and the schools, to be broadcast on their ‘School TV’ website.  Burnage coach, Greg Morrison commented, “It was a really good chance for the boys to play against different schools. They really enjoyed themselves and loved playing at such a famous venue.”

The two Tameside-based hubs battled it out in the final with New Charter Academy pipping Astley Sports College to the post to be crowned Hub Champions.  The Ashton-under-Lyne students were delighted to take home the trophy:

“The tournament was a great day out and all the games were played in the right spirit,” said team captain Jonny Mpogi.

Team mate Alex Mort added, “It was superb to meet other schools from the Manchester United Foundation and brilliant to go home with the trophy.”
