Denis Law, Peter Schmeichel and Denis Irwin were guests of honour at a prestigious fundraising dinner which raised over £38,000 for the United for UNICEF partnership.

Thousands raised for UNICEF at Legends in London dinner

Hosted by life-long Red and Manchester United Foundation trustee Eamonn Holmes, the event took place at the iconic St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in London and was attended by celebrities from the world of Sport, TV, Music and Showbiz, including Lord Jeffrey Archer, Angus Deayton, Mariella Frostrup and Tim McInnerny.

Guests enjoyed a three-course meal before the legendary United trio took to the stage to engage in a no-holds-barred Q&A session.  The former players were quizzed by the audience about their own footballing heroes and their individual memories of playing for the biggest club in the world.

An auction of unique prizes was later hosted by best-selling author Lord Jeffrey Archer; proceeds of which will benefit the club’s charity partner UNICEF, the world’s leading children’s organisation.

United for UNICEF works to help the world’s most vulnerable children. The most recent funding has helped to equip 35 child survival centres in Senegal with the materials needed to ensure that children survive and thrive. This includes simple yet lifesaving equipment such as malaria nets, weighing scales, bed nets, and medication along with training for midwives and healthcare staff.

The thirteen-year partnership is the longest running of its kind between a sporting organisation and a global charity and to date United for UNICEF has raised over £2.5 million, helping over 2.2 million children worldwide.

Following the event Peter Schmeichel commented, “I really enjoyed myself this evening; it has been a very successful event and has raised a lot of money for UNICEF.”  He continued, “The relationship between United and UNICEF is phenomenally special, in the past 13 years we have managed to raise an awful lot of money and it is going to children that really need the help and support.  I’m very happy and very proud to be involved.”

Denis Law added, “It was absolutely fantastic; I met some wonderful people, had a wonderful time and the most important thing is to hold such events so we can raise money for deserving charities.“

David Bull, UNICEF UK Executive Director said, “UNICEF is extremely proud of our thirteen year partnership with Manchester United and the continuing support we receive from the club and its fans. We are extremely grateful to everyone who attended this evening or bid on the charity auction. The money raised tonight will truly transform the lives of children across the world.”
