One of Manchester United’s greatest goalkeepers, Peter Schmeichel joined current player Darren Fletcher and the original ‘King’ of the Stretford End, Denis Law for our annual Lunch with Legends on 28th February.  The event, hosted by Eamonn Holmes, sold out within weeks of going on sale and raised over £30,000 for the Foundation.

Guests enjoyed a two-course lunch before the three players took to the stage for an open question and answer session, during which they gave the audience a first-hand account of the highs and lows of three glorious eras in the Club’s history.

There was a tremendous buzz in the room as Peter Schmeichel stepped on to the stage to answer questions about his astonishing playing career. After citing his last minute penalty save in the semi-final replay of the FA Cup in 1999 as arguably his greatest ever save, the Great Dane responded to all the guests’ questions - ranging from getting the ‘hair-dryer’ treatment from Sir Alex, to the dangers of tweeting.

Commenting on his feelings about returning to Old Trafford, Peter Schmeichel said, “It’s great to be back at Old Trafford seeing some familiar faces – it feels like home.”

Denis Law received a standing ovation and entertained guests with great anecdotes from Sir Matt Busby’s historic 1968 European Cup win.

When asked what will happen when Sir Alex hangs up his boots, the canny Scot replied:

“Thankfully he hung them up a long time ago! He was never that great a player. If you mean as a manager, I think he’ll retire when he doesn’t enjoy going to the training ground every morning, and at the moment he still loves every minute of it. It will be very difficult when he retires but Sir Alex has made sure that the playing staff and facilities are in place for this club to stay in great shape.”

Darren Fletcher declared that he is set on wearing a red shirt again next season. The Scottish International also described how humbled he felt to be sitting amongst such great United Legends:

“I can’t believe I’m sat here sharing the same sofa as Schmeichel and Law! I’m a fan myself and my dad’s hero was Denis Law, so this is unreal for me, I feel completely humbled.”

Also amongst the guests were former player Nicky Butt and Coronation Street’s Antony Cotton who was also on hand to help out with the fundraising.
