Movember

Staff and coaches from the Manchester United Foundation have been given a helping hand in keeping warm this winter, all in aid of Movember.

Movember

The men were joined at Carrington by Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez to show off their ‘Mexican’ style moustaches which they had grown for the month long campaign.

Movember is a worldwide phenomenon and challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache.  The rules are simple, start on November 1st clean shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month.  The moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men.  Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember commit to growing a moustache for 30 days.

Steve Hoy, who runs the Manchester United Foundation’s Men’s Health projects, explains why he chose to back the campaign.

“Anything that highlights men's health is a positive thing. We need to get the message across that lifestyle has a massive impact on men's health. It's important that they have the knowledge to make their own informed choices.”

Asked about growing a ‘mo’, he said, “I’ve never had a moustache before and although some said it suited me, I found it rather itchy so don't think I'll will be growing another one anytime soon!”

Chief Executive of the Foundation, John Shiels, also supported the campaign by growing a moustache.  “Growing a moustache for the month of November really brings an opportunity to highlight Men's Health.   Wherever you parade, it becomes a talking point so awareness will be raised.”
