Carrington Charity Challenge
Members of the public joined Manchester United legends in a charity football tournament at Manchester United’s First Team training ground in Carrington on Saturday 5th June 2010.
The usually closed-door facility opened for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for players who have donated and fundraised for the Manchester United Foundation and Manchester United’s six charity partners: Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity, The Christie Charity, Francis House Children’s Hospice, The Legacy - Rainbow House, The Children’s Society and Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
Manchester United legends Brian McClair, Tony Coton, Lou Macari, Paddy Crerand, Mickey Thomas and Wilf McGuinnes managed the teams as they competed in seven-a-side tournaments for the Charity Challenge cup.
Manchester United Legend Brian McClair said: “I have taken part in the Charity Challenge at Carrington for the past few years and it is very worthwhile. It is a brilliant day! The lads who take part are all different shapes sizes who enjoy the game, they all enjoy football and it is great for them to come and see behind the scenes at Manchester United. It was a glorious day on Saturday - I hope they all enjoyed themselves. I think it is amazing that people give up their time to raise money for charity in this way.”
The Cadbury’s team from Sheffield took the honours on the day beating NCC, Manchester (representing the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital 3-1 in the final.
Andy Dawson from Sheffield, Cadbury’s team-captain: “The day was “sweet like chocolate”, it was really good, a cracking day. It well organised, the whole team had a really good laugh and we are looking forward to coming back next year to defend our trophy! Carrington is an amazing place; the facilities here are second to none. We would like to say thanks to everyone. And of course it is nice to come out winning the trophy, we will definitely celebrate that.”
Lex Autolease, Cheadle (representing Francis House) took the runner’s up plate beating Eskimo Web Design (representing The Children’s Society) 3 – 2 for on penalties.
Wendy Rennison, Charity Relationship Manager, Manchester United Foundation said: “Since we have worked with our six charity partners we have raised thousands of pounds through our charity challenge days – last year alone raised £30,000. The fans involved are always thrilled to see behind the scenes of the Club and play where our First Team train, and of course meet a few well known faces too.”
Jenny Haskey, The Christie Charity said: “This is the third year for this fantastic event and The Christie is proud to once again be a part of the day, especially as the money raised helps us provide vital rehabilitation for our young cancer patients.“
