Wes Brown joins powerchair football team ahead of Treble Reunion

Wes Brown swapped his boots for wheels as he joined the Manchester United powerchair team for a training session ahead of the Treble Reunion match on 26th May.

The Treble-winner enjoyed trying a different style of football, as he prepares to join his former 1999 teammates for the celebration match against FC Bayern Legends.

“I had a go and really enjoyed it; I even scored,” said Wes. “These guys are experts and it’s been brilliant to play with them. I think it’s really important the Foundation offers these opportunities to people of all abilities and they all love it.”

Powerchair football consists of a team of four players using specialised electric wheelchairs with a large front bumper to control and hit an oversized heavy football to score goals.

The Manchester United powerchair team forms part of Manchester United Foundation’s disability programme, Inclusive Reds, which is supported by the Premier League and BT Fund and aims to provide equal sport and physical activity opportunities for all.  The Manchester United team runs in partnership with Sale United Powerchair Club, and the teams regularly compete in the North West Powerchair Football League Premiership and the Muscular Dystrophy UK Premiership.

Wes continued, “The Foundation is definitely needed; the help they give young people in the community is amazing and the players and ex-players all love getting involved. To also be able to support the Foundation through the legends matches is brilliant; it’s all good fun, the boys love doing it and it makes a lot of money for the charity.”

Wes will be returning to Old Trafford for the Treble Reunion match on 26th May as the Manchester United Legends take on FC Bayern Legends in a celebration match to raise funds for Manchester United Foundation.

Wes will be joined in defence by Jaap Stam, Denis Irwin and the Neville brothers, whilst David Beckham, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes make up the midfield and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Teddy Sheringham, Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole will be back up front. Peter Schmeichel will be back in net with Raimond van der Gouw, Ronny Johnsen, Henning Berg, David May, Jesper Blomqvist and Jonathan Greening completing the squad.

Fans can also look forward to welcoming Sir Alex Ferguson back to the Old Trafford dugout, as he and his team celebrate lifting the FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League trophies during that iconic season.
