Former Manchester United midfielder joins Foundation coaching staff

The BTEC scheme, run in collaboration with Salford City College, is designed to develop leaders of the future, whilst allowing students the opportunity to gain valuable insight into the coaching philosophies of Manchester United.

Beardsmore, who made 56 appearances for United from 1986-1993, was previously a part of AFC Bounemouth's Community Sports Trust where he forged partnerships with local and international football clubs as well as expanding the trust's Soccer Schools programme.

Russell's move back to United ends an 18-year-long association with AFC Bournemouth, where he ended his footballing career in 1998. Russell played five seasons at Dean Court, during which he captained& AFC Bournemouth& in the 1998& Football League Trophy& defeat to Grimsby Town at& Wembley Stadium.

Manchester United Foundation operations director John Eades was delighted with the addition to the BTEC course hosted with Salford City College. John said "We're delighted to have recruited a former player with such a strong background in coaching community football. Being able to share Russell's experiences as a Manchester United player and football coach will be a great benefit to the students who are enrolled on the BTEC in Sport programme."

Russell, who starts his new role in time for the academic year, is looking forward to the challenge of coaching on the popular Foundation project. He said, "During my time at Bournemouth I have remained close to my Manchester United roots by continuing a role on match days and taking part in the legends games, so to now have this new opportunity at my boyhood club is an exciting step for me; I can't wait to get stuck in."
