Legends are Back: The history

Over the past five years Manchester United has teamed up with fellow giants of the footballing world to bring fans spectacular events, combining world class football with top music acts to provide a fantastic family atmosphere.

In 2012 the United legends travelled to the Bernabéu to take on their Real Madrid counterparts. The match raised money for the Real Madrid Foundation and the Reds narrowly missed out on a victory, starting the return leg at Old Trafford in June 2013 at a 3-2 deficit.

Manager Bryan Robson led a strong side in 2013, as the likes of Edwin van der Sar, Jaap Stam, Ruud van Nistelrooy and the recently retired Paul Scholes took on a team of Spanish veterans including Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and Fernando Hierro.

Over 60,000 fans turned out to witness the clash on the pitch, which followed a family fun fair outside the stadium and a pre-match concert from performers Tinchy Stryder, Amelia Lily and boyband JLS.

The Spanish side took home the winners' trophy after a 2-1 victory, however the event proved a resounding success as £1 million was raised for Manchester United Foundation.

The United legends were back in force in the summer of 2014 as they challenged Bayern Munich All Stars at the Allianz Arena. The first-leg against the Germans produced an entertaining 3-3 draw, following goals from Andrew Cole (2) and Paul Scholes, with all to play for at the Theatre of Dreams in June 2015.

Once again the event offered a fun-filled family day out, with an opening ceremony featuring participants from Foundation projects, and performances from Ella Eyre, Ben Haenow and Union J.  Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was back in net for the Reds, whilst classic duo Andrew Cole and Dwight Yorke plus legendary midfielder Paul Scholes and Dutch defender Jaap Stam also stepped out of retirement and back onto the hallowed turf.  The German side included the likes of Mark van Bommel, Roy Makaay and Daniel van Buyten.

The exciting match, which ended 4-2 to Manchester United (7-5 aggregate) raised over £800,000 for the Foundation's work with young people across Greater Manchester.

The Reds are now set to do it all again as they prepare to take on Barcelona at the Nou Camp on 30th June 2017, before inviting the Spaniards back to Old Trafford on 2nd September 2017.

In September 2015, the club deviated from the home and away match format to pilot an overseas legends campaign in Stockholm, against longstanding rivals Liverpool.  United emerged victorious with a 4-2 win and are now set to replicate this formula as they head Down Under to challenge Australian legends in Perth on 25th February 2017.
