Legends Are Back: £800,000 raised for the Foundation

Team managers Bryan Robson and Paul Breitner led their respective teams out to a 50,128-strong crowd and the legends had all to play for following a 3-3 draw at the first leg at the Allianz Arena in Munich last August. 

Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was back in net for the Reds, whilst classic duo Andrew Cole and Dwight Yorke plus legendary midfielder Paul Scholes and Dutch defender Jaap Stam also stepped out of retirement and back onto the hallowed turf.  The German side included the likes of Mark van Bommel, Roy Makaay and Daniel van Buyten.

The exciting match, which ended 4-2 (7-5 aggregate) with goals from Louis Saha (9), Alexander Zickler (16), Dwight Yorke (39), Michael Tarnat (42), Andrew Cole (45) and Jesper Blomqvist (83), followed a live concert from top boyband Union J, festival favourite Ella Eyre and 2014 X Factor winner Ben Haenow.  There was also a fanzone outside the stadium offering a funfair, live music, activities and traditional English and German fayre, proving to be a fantastic day out for the whole family.

All proceeds from the event will go towards Manchester United Foundation’s work in the local community.  Foundation projects were showcased during the opening ceremony where 200 young people representing local partner schools, girls’ football, disability football and the flagship Street Reds programme paraded flags onto the pitch.  At half time, the Foundation youth choir and dance crew performed.

John Shiels, chief executive of Manchester United Foundation, said, “Today has been absolutely brilliant I would like to thank each and every one of the people who have come here today. You don’t know how much this means to Manchester United Foundation.

“Manchester is full of fantastic young people and some of them need a little guidance, help and support and that’s what Manchester United Foundation does. We go into the areas of social need and give help to those youngsters.”

Team manager Bryan Robson added, “It was a great turn out from the fans so I have to thank them because they make this sort of day.  It’s also been great for the players; it was very similar to the Munich game over there when it was 3-3.  Loads of goals, great entertainment and raising loads of money for Manchester United Foundation.”
