George Best anthem re-released for charity

Young people from Greater Manchester have collaborated with local band ‘The Electric Stars’ to re-record the iconic song ‘Belfast Boy’, in a bid to reach number one in the UK charts in time for George Best’s birthday.

Manchester band and United choir re-record classic George Best anthem for charity

The song is a new version of the 1970 release by Don Fardon, which originally reached number 32 in the UK chart.  It features commentary from memorable George Best moments, a new verse penned by Electric Stars frontman Jason Edge, plus backing vocals from the Manchester United Foundation Youth Choir.

The tribute to the legendary Manchester United player hits the shops today (Monday 12th May 2014) with all proceeds being split between the George Best Foundation and the club’s own Foundation, which works with young people across Greater Manchester.

The track is currently ranked at number six in the Amazon chart (as of 12/05/14) and the band have high hopes that it will climb to the top spot in time to celebrate what would have been the Northern Irish star’s 68th birthday on 22nd May:

“It sounds a bit crazy but we are now in the position where we can get it to number one in the charts for George’s birthday,” explained Jason.  “In the modern day industry you only have to sell around 40,000 copies to get into the top 10 and possibly top the charts.  If just a percentage of United fans buy the single it would scream into the charts and we can raise a lot of money for charity.”

The ‘Belfast Boy’ CD comes with a keepsake sleeve-note of tributes from a host of names including Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Bobby Charlton and Ryan Giggs.

Speaking of the legendary Red, Giggs said, “I count myself lucky to have had the chance to know George Best.  He was a truly fantastic footballer and a genuine United legend.”

The single is available to buy or download now.  All proceeds will go towards helping to change the lives of young people via the George Best Foundation and Manchester United Foundation.
