The star striker, who played for Manchester United and Real Madrid during his illustrious 19 year career, will make an appearance for both teams on the day.
“I won trophies at Manchester United and Real Madrid,” he said, “but my proudest memory from both clubs is training and playing week in, week out with my team-mates. It will be an honour to play alongside both sets of players again.
“Playing at Old Trafford gave me so many unforgettable experiences, so to come back and play in front of the fans again makes this a really special event.”
Meanwhile, teen pop sensation Amelia Lily is to perform at the opening ceremony of the event. The X Factor finalist will entertain the crowds alongside boy band JLS during a special pre-match concert at the Red Heart United Legends match, to help raise money for Manchester United Foundation.
Following the concert, Van Nistelrooy will join a host of former Manchester United players including Edwin van der Sar, Denis Irwin, Jaap Stam and Teddy Sheringham, who will be led by team manager Bryan Robson.
Real Madrid have enlisted the help of veterans such as Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and Fernando Hierro and hope to defend a 3-2 victory over the Reds, claimed in the first leg at the Bernabeu last year.
Red Heart United will offer a full day out for the whole family and will include special entertainment around the stadium. In addition to JLS and Amelia Lily, further musical performances will be announced in the coming weeks.
In keeping with the two clubs’ origins, there will also be the chance to try your hand at some Spanish and British themed games as well as sample traditional cuisine from both nations.
All proceeds from Red Heart United will go to the Manchester United Foundation, to fund projects that help young people in disadvantaged areas of Greater Manchester.
