Legends Denis Irwin and Andy Ritchie were joined by MUTV’s Mandy Henry, Foundation Chief Executive John Shiels, Foundation trustee Tom Bloxham and around 20 Manchester United fans.
The Trek was a huge success and raised in excess of £40,000 for the Foundation. The event was the brain child of MUTV presenter Mandy Henry, talking of her experience she said:
“Our trip to the Sahara desert was even more special than I could have imagined, but also a lot tougher! We trekked 105km over five days, and came across some unbelievably difficult terrain. The one thing that will stand out in my mind is the fantastic camaraderie and team spirit we had in our group. I would urge anyone thinking of doing anything similar to go for it - it’s an experience you will never forget.”
Following the success of this trip, charity challenges such as this will become an annual event for the Foundation. Chief Executive John Shiels thinks that for any football fan this is the ideal challenge:
“This was the trip of a lifetime for anyone but the fact that fans were given the opportunity to do this the Manchester United way, with Manchester United legends must have been amazing for them. Next year we will be doing another exotic charity challenge - hopefully involving some more legends - so keep your eyes on our website if you want to get involved.”
United Legend and participant Denis Irwin was in agreement that the trip was a massive success. “It’s been a fantastic experience”, he said. “I think everyone felt a big sense of achievement when we crossed the finish line”.
